Infrared Sauna

An infrared sauna session is one of the best ways to unwind, relax, and melt into a puddle of happiness. If your muscles are screaming at you, it’s time to visit the Float Institute and check out the awesome infrared sauna benefits waiting for you inside.

What is an Infrared Sauna?

An infrared sauna is a room that gets super hot—between 110 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit—designed for relaxing and recharging. Infrared saunas feel amazing after a workout, but you can take a seat in the heat any time you’re in the mood for some luxurious vibes.

What’s the Difference Between a Normal Sauna and an Infrared Sauna?

Let’s clear up some confusion: an infrared sauna is not a steam room, and it’s not filled with blazing hot rocks. The infrared sauna is in a category of its own altogether. Here are some key differences:

Traditional Sauna

Traditional saunas heat the air in the room, usually with a pile of hot stones. Water is provided to throw onto the stones, creating temporary steam. Traditional saunas range from 145–200 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can only stay inside for about 20 minutes maximum.

Infrared Sauna

An infrared sauna radiates heat directly onto your body, rather than heating up the air. You can’t see infrared light wavelengths, but you can feel them! This is why infrared saunas don’t feel quite as hot and stifling as traditional saunas—the heat is delivered exactly where you need it, instead of hovering all around you.

Health Benefits of an Infrared Sauna

Turns out that sitting around and sweating can be pretty good for you! As you relax in an infrared sauna, the radiant heat gets to work behind the scenes. Studies show a wide range of potential infrared sauna benefits, including:

  • Stress relief
  • Soothed muscles
  • Pain management
  • Better sleep
  • Improved heart health
  • Help with seasonal affective disorder
  • Detoxification
  • Circulation
  • Boosted immunity
  • Weight loss

How to get the most out of an Infrared Sauna Experience

Just like any other wellness treatment, there are things you can do to prepare for your infrared sauna session.

Hydrate

Drinking plenty of water will improve blood flow and maximize the health benefits of your session. Make sure you’re sipping your Stanley before, during, and after.

Avoid alcohol

Booze and sauna don’t mix! Drinking before your visit can leave you feeling dehydrated, dizzy, and just all around not great.

Dress down

Don’t be afraid to wear your birthday suit to this party. We recommend sitting in an infrared sauna either naked or in a bathing suit, but breathable clothing works too. Remember—the goal is to sweat.

Skip if you’re pregnant or have a heart condition

Sauna-ing isn’t for everyone. If you have issues with your heart or blood pressure, or if you’re growing a tiny human in your body, talk to your doctor about infrared therapy before hopping in.
